Dolls are used in sacrificial rites for childbirth and to appease ‘Eka Abasi’ to lay her hands off a sick baby.
Akwa Ibom State is also the home of traditional arts of Africa, showcasing different types of raffia and cane crafts. Ikot Ekpene the main cluster of raffia craft in the state is recognized nationally and internationally as the “Raffia city”, while in most communities in Itam in Itu local government area, cane craft is more of a passion than art. Ikot Ekpene town is the main centre of the craft trade; this explains the pseudonym of Ikot Ekpene as “Raffia City”.
Fashion accessories, decorative items and other goods like the lawyers’ wig made from raffia products have gained recognition as Nigeria’s souvenirs. Another craft undertaken in many parts of the state is pottery, and its products are glazed earthenware water pots, clay pot for cooking, musical drums, ornamental flower pot. There is a vast international market for investors. Some locals are engaged in blacksmithing and metal construction. Raffia making is not just an art, but also serves as a source of income for local communities.
