Prof. Desmond Wilson to present #UNIUYO’s 44th inaugural lecture.

  • Summary: A former Dean of Arts and Nigeria Coordinator, African Council on Communication Education, Desmond Wilson, will on Thursday present the 44th inaugural lecture of the University of Uyo.

    Mr. Wilson, a globally respected professor of Communication Arts, would be speak on the topic; Ethnocommunicology, Trado-modern Communication and Metamorphosis in Nigeria; An Iconoclast’s Demystification of some Communication Traditions.


    The 44th Inaugural Lecture is scheduled for the Onyema Ugochukwu Hall located at the Township Campus of the university at 3pm.

    Mr. Wilson, a member of PREMIUM TIMES editorial board, holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English from the University of Ibadan, a Master of Arts Degree in Language Arts as well as Doctor of Philosophy in Communication and Language Arts from the same university.

    Before joining the academics, Mr. Wilson served as Issues and Records Officer, West African Examinations Council, Yaba, Reconciliation Officer/Headquarters Accounts, National Bank of Nigeria Plc. Master Grade III, Government Teachers’ Training College, Igbogbo, Ikorodu, and Assistant Lecturer, The Polytechnic, Calabar.

    Between 1978 -1985, he was at various times Lecturer III, Lecturer II and Lecturer I at the Polytechnic, Calabar. Mr. Wilson was appointed an English Language examiner by the WAEC in 1979 before he joined the then University of Cross River State as Lecturer II in 1985.

    He was promoted Lecturer I in 1990 and Senior Lecturer in 1993 when the institution was renamed University of Uyo. In 1997, Mr. Wilson was promoted Associate Professor and Professor in 2000.

    Apart from these, Mr. Wilson also served as Teaching Assistant in the Department of Communication and Language Arts, University of Ibadan, 1981 – 1983, Senior Lecturer, University of Calabar, General Studies Unit, 1978 – 1980, Instructor (Part Time) in English, Science Laboratory Technology Training Programme, University of Calabar, 1977-1980, Director, Institute of Information and Communication Technology, Delta State University, Abraka, Feb. 2005- Jan. 2006 and Consultant on the development of the Media Studies programme, University of Botswana, Gaborone in 2009.

    Professor Wilson is a member, National Council, Amnesty International, Nigerian Secretariat. 1988 -1992, member, African Council for Communication Education from 1993 till date, member, Nigeria Union of Journalists from 1993 till date, member, University Media and Aesthetics Association from 1995 till date, member, International Executive Committee, African Council for Communication Education from 2003-2009, member, Nigerian Institute of Public Relations from 2006 till date, Editor, Journal of Media and Aesthetics from 1996 till date and Editor-in-Chief, Nigerian Journal of Communication from 2009 till date.

    He has published over 40 academic papers in both local and international journals and has mentored hundreds of Mass Communications and Journalism experts within and outside Nigeria.
