THE Federal Government weekend commenced the construction of the N142.6 billion Lekki deep sea port in the Ibeju Lekki area of Lagos.
Speaking at the issuance of notice to proceed ceremony on Saturday, Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA, Alhaji Sanusi Lamido Ado Bayero said the commencement of the port’s construction is government’s commitment to making the project a reality.Ado Bayero explained that the port will enhance growth of the Nigerian market, adding that government will remain committed and continue to support the project.
According to him, when the port is fully operational, it will make significant positive macro economic impact on Nigeria in terms of employment, taxes and royalties.
He said; “As a port authority, we see potential for growth in the Nigerian market and strive to realise it at all times.
“Therefore, as we begin the consummation of our strategic alliance with the promoters of this project and look towards a bright future, we assure you that the Npa will not waiver in its commitment to the project.
“The occasion signifies our resolve to tap into the high untapped market occasioned by port capacity gap in Nigeria.”
Speaking in similar vein, the Managing Director of Lekki Port, Mr. Aswani Haresh said issuing the notice to commence construction is the beginning of the 41-month construction period for the biggest maritime project in the country.
Haresh also said the port will commence its operation with an annual through-put capacity that is three times the capacity of the Apapa port.
