    Okene-Lokoja highway accident

    At least 12 people were killed on the early hours of Monday when a fully loaded luxury bus collided head-on with a truck carrying animals along Okene-Lokoja highway in central Nigeria's Kogi state, eye witnesses and rescuers have said.

    The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, gathered that the accident, which involved a luxury bus with registration number Lagos KRD 799 LC and a truck fully loaded with cattle with registration number Katsina 711 KTN occurred at a spot at Irepeni Village at about 5a.m. on Monday. The village has been thrown into wailing since.

    The eyewitness account said the bus was trying to evade a road barricade erected on the road by highway robbers and in the process collided head-on with a truck coming from the opposite direction.
    According to the eyewitness report, more than 30 cows were also killed in the accident.

    • Fifteen persons, including a female child, twelve men and three women sustained varying degrees of injuries.

    Confirming the accident, the Kogi State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, Charles Abochi said that 73 persons were involved in the accident out of which 12 ,’, comprising eight men and four women, died on the spot.

    He said that 15 persons, including a female child, 12 men and three women sustained varying degrees of injuries in the accident, and are being treated at the Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja, while the bodies were taken to the morgues of the Kogi State Specialist Hospital, Lokoja and Alheri Hospital at Kabba junction.

    He said that the FRSC had launched a full scale investigation to ascertain the immediate and remote causes of the accident.

    Cow car accident

    An unnamed official of the commission said efforts were being made to contact families of the victims.

    The ghastly accident had caused a lot of traffic chaos in the area as road safety officials and police was seen having a hectic day restoring a balanced traffic.

    The luxury bus was travelling from the commercial city of Lagos to the capital Abuja.
